Marc by Sofia. A New Fashion Documentary is in the Works

Fresh off the soft-focus mood of Priscilla, director Sofia Coppola is reportedly turning her lens to another cultural icon—this time in the fashion world. Her next project? A first feature documentary produced by A24: Marc by Sofia, a title that nods to his discontinued Marc by Marc Jacobs line.

The filmmaker known for pastel palettes, whispery dialogue and deeply intimate portraits of complicated youth is said to be developing an intimate behind-the-scenes portrait of the designer’s life and work. After her elegant take on Priscilla Presley’s coming-of-age, this feels like a natural next step.

Why Marc? Why Now?

Marc Jacobs has never been just a designer. He’s been a provocateur, a personality, and a performer in his own right—from his grunge-defining days at Perry Ellis to his namesake label’s high-gloss, referential theatrics. His fashion shows have long felt like cinema, complete with narratives, nostalgia and moments of shock or sentimentality.

And it’s that sense of theatrical intimacy that likely drew Coppola in.

Jacobs and Coppola are no strangers. For decades they’ve moved within the same fashion circles—as muses, collaborators, and friends. Coppola directed campaigns for Jacobs’ Daisy fragrances; she was even the face of Daisy’s 2002 campaign and appeared again in its Fall/Winter 2015 ads. Their creative ties extend to Jacobs’ tenure at Louis Vuitton (1997–2013) and to projects for Heaven by Marc Jacobs. This film promises not just a portrait, but a love letter.

What We Know So Far

While plot details are still under wraps, this will be the first full-length documentary devoted to Jacobs since Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton in 2007. The documentary is said to be an intimate, unconventional portrait of Marc Jacobs, crafted by Sofia Coppola to capture the genius and singular universe of the iconic American designer. Think: fashion history meets character study, filtered through Coppola’s signature lens of quiet, stylised storytelling.

Marc by Sofia will premiere at the Venice Film Festival, which will take place from 27 August to 6 September, 2025. The red carpet alone is expected to be buzzing full of Marc Jacobs’ designs.

Why We’re Already Obsessed

Fashion and film are finally leaning toward each other again, and this project is set to land right in the middle of that conversation. Marc by Sofia promises mood, fabric, feeling—and the kind of cultural insight that only comes from someone who’s lived both worlds.

It’ll be about legacy, yes. But also about loneliness, glamour, control, collapse, and reinvention—Coppola’s wheelhouse.
